5 Ways to Make Your Shed More Secure
Share
Your shed is probably one of the most vulnerable parts of your property. Most sheds come with basic hasp and staple locks that can be ripped off with a screwdriver in seconds — and burglars know it. Tools, lawnmowers, bikes, and garden equipment are all high-value and easy to sell on. So what can you actually do to make your shed more secure?
1. Upgrade your shed lock bar
The single biggest upgrade you can make is fitting a heavy-duty steel security bar across your shed door. Unlike standard hasps, a properly fitted security bar distributes the force of any attack across the full width of the door, making it extremely difficult to force open. Our Warrior Weld shed security bars are made from solid steel here in Halifax, finished in anti-corrosive zinc paint, and supplied with coach bolts so the fixings are completely hidden from the outside. Available in sizes from 600mm to 1500mm to suit single and double shed doors.
2. Use a good quality padlock
A security bar is only as strong as the padlock you use with it. Look for a closed-shackle padlock — the shackle (the U-shaped part) is mostly hidden inside the body of the lock, making it very difficult to cut. Brands like Squire and Abus make excellent closed-shackle padlocks at reasonable prices.
3. Secure the hinges
If your shed door opens outward, the hinges may be exposed on the outside. These can be attacked with a hammer and chisel. Replace exposed hinges with security hinges that have non-removable pins, or fit a hinge bolt to reinforce them.
4. Consider a security post or bollard
If your shed contains particularly high-value items like a ride-on mower or a motorcycle, consider fitting a ground anchor or security bollard nearby. Our steel bollards can be concreted in permanently or bolted down, and can be used with a security chain to anchor vehicles or equipment.
5. Add a visible deterrent
Burglars choose targets based on how easy they look. Visible security measures — a robust lock bar, a good padlock, a security light — are often enough to make them move on. You don't need to make your shed impenetrable, just less appealing than the next one.
