Choosing the Right Campervan Sink: Size, Material & Plumbing
Share
Fitting a sink into a campervan, caravan or boat conversion looks simple until you start measuring up — space is tight, plumbing options are limited, and a sink that's slightly too big can wreck an otherwise perfect layout. Here's what to think through before you buy.
Size is about more than the sink itself
It's tempting to buy the biggest sink that will physically fit the worktop cut-out, but leave room around it too. You'll need space for taps, drainage, and realistically for washing an actual plate or pan — a sink that's technically big enough on paper can still feel cramped in daily use. Measure your available worktop space first, then work backwards to a sink size that leaves a sensible margin, rather than starting from the sink and hoping it fits.
Stainless steel is the practical default
For a vehicle or boat conversion, stainless steel is generally the sensible choice over ceramic or plastic alternatives — it's lightweight (important when every kilo matters in a van build), resists corrosion from both fresh and salt water, and shrugs off the knocks and vibration that come with being on the road or water.
Waste and plumbing — decide early
This is the detail that catches people out. There are two broad approaches:
- Sink only: You handle the waste pipe, trap and tank connections yourself, which gives more flexibility if you already have a specific plumbing layout in mind.
- Sink with waste pipe and tank kit: A more complete, ready-to-fit solution that includes a waste pipe and a waste tank (commonly 10 litres), which suits a first-time build or anyone who'd rather not source those parts separately.
Deciding this before you buy avoids ending up with a sink that doesn't match the rest of your plumbing plan.
Depth matters more than people expect
A shallow sink splashes more and struggles with anything bigger than a mug. If your build has the headroom underneath, a deeper bowl makes day-to-day use noticeably easier — particularly if you're cooking and washing up as part of full-time van life rather than the occasional weekend trip.
