How to Improve the Security of Your Patio Doors and French Doors

Patio doors and French doors are one of the most common entry points targeted by burglars. Standard multi-point locks offer some protection, but a determined intruder can bypass them with the right tools. The good news is there are some very effective, low-cost measures you can take to significantly improve the security of your patio or French doors.
1. Fit a security bar across the handles
The most effective single upgrade is fitting a heavy-duty steel security bar that sits across both door handles on the inside. Even if a burglar manages to bypass the lock mechanism, they can't push the doors open with the bar in place. 2. Use a door security pin
For sliding patio doors specifically, a simple but effective measure is dropping a cut-down metal bar or commercial security pin into the bottom track. This prevents the door from being slid open even if the lock is defeated.
3. Check your lock grade
If your patio door lock is more than 10 years old, it may not meet current security standards. Look for doors and locks that meet PAS 24 or Secured by Design standards. If you're replacing a door, always look for one with a multi-point locking system.
4. Add a visible deterrent
Burglars assess targets quickly. Visible security measures — a security bar on the inside, a security light outside, or a CCTV camera — all reduce the likelihood of your property being chosen. The goal is to look like more effort than the next house.
5. Consider window and conservatory security too
