How to Choose the Right Handrail for Your Steps
Share
If you're thinking about adding a handrail to your front door steps, garden path, or driveway, you've made a smart decision. A good handrail isn't just a legal requirement in some situations — it genuinely makes steps safer for everyone, particularly older visitors and anyone carrying shopping or children.
But with so many styles and sizes available, how do you choose the right one? Here's our straightforward guide.
Step 1: Measure your steps correctly
The most common mistake people make is measuring the run of their steps (the horizontal distance) rather than the length of rail they actually need. The handrail needs to follow the angle of the steps, so it's always slightly longer than the horizontal measurement. Our Measuring Guide under Guides & Tips walks you through exactly how to do this.
Step 2: Choose your fixing method
Most of our handrails use an adjustable pivot base, which means they fix to the ground alongside your steps and can be angled to follow the slope precisely. This works brilliantly for most domestic steps. If you don't have a wall to fix to and prefer not to drill into your path, our concrete-in handrails are an excellent alternative — the posts are set permanently into the ground.
Step 3: Pick your style
We make handrails in several profiles:
- Hammered edge — a traditional, chunky look that suits period and cottage-style properties
- Flat bar top — clean and contemporary, suits modern homes
- Tube top — smooth round top rail, great for a minimalist look
- Convex style — elegant curved profile, popular for front door steps
- Wrought iron — heavier, more decorative, suited to longer runs
Step 4: Choose your colour
All our handrails are available in black or white powder coat as standard. Black tends to suit most properties and is more forgiving of weathering over time. White gives a crisp, fresh appearance but may require occasional touching up.
Step 5: Get the right size
Our rails start at 800mm and go up to 3000mm for longer runs. If none of our standard sizes fit, contact us for a free quote — we can fabricate to any length you need.
