How to Use Screed Tripods: A Step-by-Step Guide to Perfectly Level Floors

Getting a perfectly level floor is one of the most critical steps in any screeding job. Even a small error in level can cause problems with door clearances, drainage, and the final finish. Here's a step-by-step guide to using screed tripods correctly to get a consistently level result every time.

What you'll need

  • Screed tripods (we recommend one every 1,500mm across the area)
  • A laser level
  • Liquid screed or concrete

Step 1: Determine your datum level

Before placing any tripods, you need to establish your datum — the target height of your finished floor. This is typically taken from a fixed reference point such as the final finished floor level (allowing for any floor covering like tiles or laminate) or a door threshold. Be precise here: the datum determines everything else.

Step 2: Set your first tripod

Place your first screed tripod next to the datum point. Adjust the threaded shaft up or down until the disc sits exactly at datum level. Use a laser level to confirm accuracy.

Step 3: Space and set the remaining tripods

Place additional tripods throughout the area, spacing them approximately 1,500mm apart in a grid pattern. Using your laser level, adjust each tripod disc until it matches the datum level. Take your time with this step — it's the foundation of a level pour.

Step 4: Pour your screed

Pour the liquid screed or concrete across the area, bringing it up to the level of the tripod discs. Work methodically and check that there are no high or low spots between tripods. The discs act as your guide — once the screed reaches them, you're at the right level.

Step 5: Remove and clean the tripods

Remove each tripod carefully immediately after the surrounding screed has been poured, before it begins to set. Clean each tripod thoroughly straight away — pay particular attention to the threaded shaft, as screed sets hard very quickly on threads. Lubricate the thread periodically to extend the life of your tripods.

Why choose Warrior Weld screed tripods?

Unlike many tripods on the market, ours screw all the way down to floor level — making them suitable for very shallow screed depths that other tripods simply can't handle. Made in the UK and available as a single tripod, 5-pack, or 10-pack for larger projects.
