UK Handrail Regulations: What You Need to Know Before Buying
Share
If you have steps at the front of your house, a handrail isn't just a nice-to-have — in some circumstances it's a legal requirement, and in all circumstances it makes your steps significantly safer. Here's what the UK building regulations say, and what you need to consider when choosing a rail.
When is a handrail legally required in the UK?
Under UK Building Regulations (Approved Document K), a handrail is required on any stair or ramp with two or more risers (steps). Specifically:
- Stairs with two or more risers require at least one handrail
- Stairs over 1,000mm wide require handrails on both sides
- Handrails should be between 900mm and 1,000mm above the pitch line of the stairs
- Handrails should extend the full length of the stair flight where possible
These regulations apply to new builds and major renovations. For existing homes, there's no legal requirement to retrofit a handrail — but it's strongly advisable, particularly if elderly people visit your property.
What height should a handrail be?
Building regulations specify that handrails should sit between 900mm and 1,000mm above the nosing (front edge) of each step. In practice, most domestic handrails are fitted at around 900mm, which is a comfortable height for most adults.
Does it matter what the handrail is made of?
The regulations don't specify material, but handrails must be graspable — meaning they should be easy to hold onto in an emergency. Round or oval profiles are considered most ergonomic. All our handrails are designed to be functional as well as decorative.
What about planning permission?
For most domestic handrails on front steps, planning permission is not required as it falls under permitted development. However, if you live in a listed building or conservation area, you should check with your local authority before making any changes to the exterior of your property.
